Using the WeightWare™
The WeightWare Weight Analyzer calculates your Body Mass Index,
and helps you to interpret what it means. It's a quick and convenient
- Understand your current weight
- Compare your weight to US averages for your age, height, and gender
- See how your weight may be increasing your risk of disease
- Set reasonable and achievable weight loss goals
Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculated number* that relates your weight to your height, and is often used in medical studies
and weight loss program to classify people as "overweight" or "obese".
Determining your Body Mass Index
When you first open this window, the Height field will be filled in, but disabled (grayed out). In this
mode, you can simply enter your Weight and your BMI will automatically be calculated.
Alternatively, you can enter a value for BMI, and the corresponding Weight will
be instantly calculated for you.
To get the best interpretation of your Body Mass Index, make sure that you have selected the appropriate
Gender, and that you have entered your Age, and your Waist Size.
Interpreting your Body Mass Index
The lower portion of the window shows two interpretations of the currently displayed Body Mass Index. The
first description is based on the Halls.MD formulas.
Steven B. Halls, MD**, has developed formulas that take into account age and gender, in addition to weight and height.
The next description is based on the simpler interpretation of BMI used by the
US Centers for Disease Control.
Relative Risk of Disease
Based on the current Body Mass Index and Waist Size, a "Relative Risk of Disease" is displayed. This risk
description is based on formulas used by the US Centers for Disease Control.
Based on Age, Height, and Gender, your US Weight Percentile is displayed. This is a good way of
comparing your weight to others of your Age, Height, and Gender. The example above shows that a
44-year old woman, who is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, and weighs 142.7 pounds is in the 28th percentile (in other words,
72% of 44 year old, 5 foot 4 inch women weigh more than 142.7 pounds).
* Your Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms,
by your height in meters squared (which illustrates the WeightWare motto:
"We do the math, so you don't have to!").
